Before you buy

Penguin still makes this one, and it is the model Penguin builds for plunges: 7,500 BTU/hr with the pump built in. Penguin says it chills to 37°F and holds the low to mid 40s°F in normal use.

• Power: 110 to 120V, 3.9 A, 450 W. Penguin's current spec lists a 6-foot cord; older listings, including the one below, say 10 feet with GFCI.
• Size: 17 x 15 x 13 inches, 49 pounds, 56 dBA. Titanium coil, R-32 refrigerant, 3/4-inch camlock connections.
• Outdoor rated for air above 32°F. At freezing or below, disconnect and drain it completely.
• In the box: chiller, quick-connect fittings and an inline debris screen. Tubing comes only with the optional Install & Filter Kit (washable 150-micron filter, two 6-foot lengths of 3/4-inch tubing, two bulkheads for tub walls 1/4 inch thick or less).
• Warranty: 1 year included; paid 2- and 3-year extensions. Penguin says it is not meant for commercial use.

The catch is placement. The pump is not self-priming, so the chiller has to sit within about 3 feet of the tub drain, with its base level with or below the tub floor. Run the pump continuously, skip the timer, and don't pair it with a filter finer than 50 microns or an ozone venturi.
