Before you buy

Penguin still sells the 1/2 HP standard chiller. It is the smallest unit in its water chiller line: 5,000 BTU/hr from a titanium coil in a PVC shell, rated 37 to 100°F with water.

• Power: 110 to 120V, 3.9 A, 450 W, 6-foot cord.
• Size: 16.25 x 14.75 x 12 inches, 39 pounds. 56 dBA.
• Ports: 1-inch female NPT. Titanium coil only; no 316 stainless option on this model.
• Pump not included. Penguin recommends a Danner Mag Drive 5.0 to 18, or any pump rated under 10 PSI (23 feet of head).
• Indoor use only. Water must flow whenever the chiller is on. Unplug the chiller before you stop the pump.
• Warranty: 1 year included, with paid 2- and 3-year extensions.

Who it suits: an indoor DIY build where you already have the tub, pump, filter and tubing. At the same 450 W, the 1/2 HP HE adds 750 BTU/hr, so compare the two before you buy.
